A Southern Nerd Turned YouTuber

Kori Ashton Headshot

I entered the tech scene coding websites by chance and 15 years later I would be known as the founder and CEO of one of San Antonio’s top-ranking development agencies grossing over a million dollars in sales each year.

Somewhere in the journey I found myself wanting to give back to the tech community that I had such a strong passion for. I loved teaching and decided to write blog articles to help others do what I was doing. Sadly they gained no traction. Not even my own mother would read them. I was boring as heck.

A friend challenged me to make a change and try to create tutorial videos. So in 2014 I started my YouTube channel. My videos were primitive and I struggled with editing, audio, and even content structure. Over time my dear-in-the-headlight look of fear lessened and I began to feel more natural on camera.

"Hey Y'all! I'm Kori Ashton and this is another WordPress Wednesday!"

Comments, likes, and subscribers started to chime in each day and my videos were getting noticed. I knew I couldn’t commit to too many per week, but a realistic commitment could be once a week. So like a religion I started WordPress Wednesday and each Wednesday come rain or shine, I would publish a how-to video out to the world to hopefully meet a need or answer a question, inspire a DIYer or equip another nerd looking to improve their website.

Today 43,000 Subscribers & Growing

In 2020 I not only have 43,000 subscribers and growing, but I also have monetized the channel to bring an average of $60K / year. I’ve started to teach other YouTubers how to monetize too.

If you had told me in 1998, while sitting on my couch and learning HTML, that I’d sell my company for over seven figures and earn my parent’s retirement, I would have never believed you. But as I move into my next entrepreneurial venture, I will continue creating content for the world in hopes that no matter my path, I will always help others.
