Hi, y’all. Welcome to another WordPress Wednesday.
My name is Kori Ashton here at WebTegrity in San Antonio, Texas (USA) Today I’m excited to bring to you 12 of my absolute favorite WordPress resources. This is going to be anything that I use for learning more about WordPress, getting inspiration for my tutorials and what I write about on my blog. Just learning in general really cool stuff about WordPress. I even use some of these resources I’m going to share with you whenever I’m struggling to write code. I found some more advanced resources that I’m just gonna give it all to you here today. All right! So stay tuned.
Before I get running with that I want to say two really odd things. One is, today, I’m doing for the first time ever Periscope. If you all aren’t familiar with that you need to check it out. It is a live broadcast, if you will, of video, and I wanted to share with you so I’ve got a behind the scenes right now going on of my phone watching me doing this tutorial. It’s really random. But if I set this just right you can see me. There, somebody just gave love. That was awesome.
And then you guys. So if you ever want to tune in and see behind the scenes of this broadcast here on our YouTube channel, you’re more than welcome to check us out over on Periscope. You’re going to look for Kori Ashton. Kori is how you spell my first name.
So you check us out on Periscope there you’re able to see the behind the scene of this actual recording which is crazy cool. You get to tune in for a little bit and see how I set up my screen, the equipment that I use, and all that other fun stuff. You also get to see more outtakes because I normally only do this as one-take wonder. If I mess up, I literally stop (hand clap) and start again. On a live broadcast, you all would be able to see everything going on. So, kinda random.
The other thing I wanted to share is that, this month, you all are amazing, we’ve gone over a thousand subscribers on our YouTube channels! If that’s not you—if you haven’t subscribed yet—will you stop for a second and please click this button right here (I’ll put it right here for you) to subscribe. Be a part of this. Every single Wednesday we produce a brand new video on WordPress goodies. All sorts of nerdy stuff. Anything from SEO with WordPress to how to actually code with WordPress. Total basic to even more advanced stuff.
So today (hand clap) I’m going to knock out some really cool advanced stuff. So let’s scroll it down here for a minute so you don’t have to stare at me the whole time. This is my very first one I want to bring you. Some of these – if you’ve watched my Channel before, I’ve mentioned these before – but I’ve also got some brand new ones. We’re going to walk through these.
(1) WPBeginner. If you’re a beginner with WordPress this is a wonderful blog for you to be able to follow. I would absolutely recommend subscribing to this blog. Phenomenal resources and they even go a little big more advanced than just beginner. Check them out. I’ll put the link to all of these that I’m giving you in the description box below as well as on WebTegrity.com
(2) The next thing is WordPress Chick. I’ve been pretty impressed with Kim. I follow her mainly over on Facebook. She is very, very active on Facebook so if you’re part of the Facebook community, I would say go over and like her page so that you can give her different blog suggestions in your feed and you’re able to stay up with all her writing. She is always producing something pretty fantastic here on her blog. So check her out.
(3) Another one that I follow quite consistently is WP Tavern. These guys, actually, they send stuff to my Inbox and my e-mail and I love it. They have some behind the scene of Automatic as well which is the company that produces WordPress, right. I would absolutely connect with these guys however you can. Stay in contact with them and follow what they’re doing.
(4) WordPress.TV If you’re not aware that this is available, this is really cool. These are WordCamps from all around the world. Another resource for you, if you’re brand new to WordPress, WordPress has events that happen in major cities and all around the world. They’re called WordCamps. It’s literally either a one- or two-day event. You come together to learn all sorts of WordPress nerdy stuff. It’s very inexpensive to attend – typically if not free, maybe $20 to $40 US if it’s a two-day event. That includes typically a cool, free t-shirt and your food. It’s amazing! Check that out in your area. If you’re not able to travel to get to one of those events, you can come here to WordPress.TV and check out incredible tutorials and resources from WordCamps around the world. People are talking about social media on here. SEO. More advanced stuff. How to sell your services if you’re an entrepreneur. So check this out. Really phenomenal resource here.
(5) WPwatercooler. I’ve been a guest on this show. It’s a lot of fun. Typically every Monday some crazy kids get together. And by kids I mean some awesome, respected amazing developers and entrepreneurs in the WordPress world. This guy on the screen right now, Chris Lema, he’s probably one of the most well known names out there in the WordPress world. You can catch their episodes. They’re typically pretty funny, pretty laid back, but you’re learning awesome things about WordPress.
(6) Another great resource that I’ve come across is WP Mayor. This one’s a little bit like the very first resource I gave you which is WP Beginner, but sometimes they go into a little bit more advanced, teaching you a little bit more about plugins, hacking different types of code, all for WordPress. We’re really, really impressed with their blogging. They’re very consistent with always producing something for us that’s really, really involved and detail oriented, and easy to understand. All right.
(7) So. This one, you guys know I have to give a shout out to Wayne McWilliams. He’s one of our – he used to be actually one of our lead developers here. He’s incredible though. We still follow him. He’s got this great blog and resource. Again, just a little bit more advanced for you. If you’re looking for how to maybe write or rather code a WordPress theme from scratch, he’s got a step-by-step tutorial on here. It’s a series that he did on how to code a WordPress theme from scratch. I would absolutely check out this blog. It is wpdevsolutions.com. Check that out when you get a chance.
(8) And if y’all know me, and you follow me at all, you know that I was just on this podcast and had an awesome time with Carrie Dils. She’s a really great gal out of the Dallas Fort Worth area here in Texas. She has this website and I’m going to ask that you guys get over here and be a part of it. You can subscribe to her podcast on iTunes and you can also just be a part of this where she can let you know what sort of topics are coming up. You can watch all the different episode archives in here. But, again, she’s connecting with really cool topics, all about WordPress. So, if you’re interested in learning more about maybe how to run a business or how to … some of the best themes that are out there or all sorts of topics. Carrie kind of goes the full gamut. So check this out.
(9) WP101. If you’re interested in finding more tutorials like what I do here with WordPress, this is one of our sponsors, actually, for our classes here at WebTegrity. WP101. Phenomenal resources. They’ve got a lot of free videos for you to watch as well as a paid environment which is, by far, really, really worth the value that you’ll be paying to be apart of that. All right.
Of course I have to brag about our video library that we have, WPWed (Moved here to AskKori.com), which stands for WordPress Wednesday.com You can come here and this is an entire library of all the videos that we’ve done which are almost over a hundred now (pretty exciting). All sorts of tutorials from everything from How To Make Google Love your WordPress Website to actually how to use specific plugins (the Revolution Slider, Visual Composer. There are 10 free, responsive themes that we think are fantastic. This is just a really great resource. And we ask that you would subscribe to our YouTube channel as well.
(10) You know what? A lot of people bypass Twitter as resource but I love it. I spend a lot of time on Twitter. I find a lot of resources and a lot of other writers, a lot of other developers in the WordPress world. You can come here and start to network and figure out how to find different people. I’m going to give you a quick tip if you’re not as familiar with Twitter. You can do a search for #WordPress. When you do that search, you’re going to find all the different people either talking about WordPress or involved with WordPress. I I’m just always overwhelmed every single day that I log in. I typically find somebody new to follow, some cool resource, somebody talking about an update that has to happen. Really keeping you up to speed. I really, really dig it a lot.
(11) Another one I want to talk about is your local Meetup Group for WordPress. If you’re anywhere near a major city and maybe even small towns could potentially have a Meetup Group that happens weekly, monthly, and they’re typically free to attend. You can come in and, in person, meet with other WordPress nerds that love to be a part of sharing their tips, asking questions, and just kind of encouraging each other. San Antonio has a pretty active one. Yusuf Chowdhury is one of our awesome leaders in this. He is always hosting some sort of event. You see one coming up even tomorrow. All sorts of fun stuff. Please check that out if you’re in the San Antonio area. If you’re not, look for one in your area. Just go to meetup.com and do a search for WordPress.
(12) WPMU DEV. They have a pretty spectacular blog over here. This is the one that I’m going to leave you with because they actually give you – I found this particular blog post and I’m going to put the link the description box below – they’re going to give you another 35 awesome resources for you to become a WordPress developer. These are going to be other blogs, other links, other tutorial areas online that you can go to and access to learn either beginner stuff or more advanced stuff. You’ll find a few that are repeats that I’ve already mentioned, but you’re going to see some in here that are just spectacular. You really want to connect with them. Subscribe to their blog. Support them and be a part. Tell them thank you for taking time every week to blast out some cool resources because they’re doing it, literally, for the love of WordPress and to give back and support the community. All right, y’all?
I hope you’re having a great Wednesday. Be sure to subscribe to our channel because every single Wednesday we’re releasing a video something crazy like this.
My name is Kori Ashton. I’ll see you next WordPress Wednesday.
Bye, y’all.
